MEDITERRANEAN DIET AND FATTY LIVER DISEASE

Fatty liver disease is the accumulation of fat in the liver. It is expected to become the leading factor in end-stage liver cancer in the next few decades. There is no miracle drug or cure but the Mediterranean diet has been proven to help in the prevention and reversal of Fatty liver disease.

The Mediterranean diet is a plant based diet and uses a lot of olive oil and nuts that are high in mono-unsaturated fats. The Mediterranean diet is high in Mono-unsaturated fatty acids(MUFA) and Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) especially omega-3 fatty acids that have been proven to reduce the risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The Mediterranean diet is high in fiber and low in sugar that contribute to metabolic syndrome one of the leading causes of fatty liver.
